In Jomsom, in ward 4 of Gharapjhong Rural Municipality in Nepal's Mustang district, pilgrims have begun gathering at a Shaligram Shila statue carved from a huge rock on the bank of the Kali Gandaki river. Shaligram Shilas are sacred stones containing ammonite fossils, regarded in Hinduism as a symbol of the god Vishnu. The statue stands 22 feet, about 6.7 metres, and is described as the world's largest replica of a Shaligram Shila. It was carved during a 15-day sculpture workshop held from April 20 to May 4, in which more than 36 sculptors took part. The organizer was Gharapjhong Rural Municipality, with joint funding from the Mustang Integrated Service Office and coordination by the Nepal Academy of Fine Arts. The workshop produced about 18 sculptures in all, including images of Shiva, the Buddha, a snow leopard, Himalayan sheep, and stupas. The English edition of OnlineKhabar reported it on June 30.
