In St. Elizabeth Parish in southwestern Jamaica, white-faced capuchin monkeys have been sighted one after another. Jamaica has no native monkeys. The first warning was issued on April 29, and the sightings extend across the settlements of Lacovia, Elgin, Mountainside, Newell, Hounslow, and Malvern. The National Environment and Planning Agency (NEPA) mobilized technical staff and residents and made repeated attempts to capture the animals, but as of May 13 none had been caught. The agency has urged people not to approach or feed the monkeys and has asked for reports of the most recent sighting locations. Against a background of growing interest in exotic pets, the agency believes the case may be linked to the illegal wildlife trade. The Jamaica Observer reported it on May 13.
