In Seligenstadt, Hesse, two men posing as police ran a fake traffic stop. The car they pulled over was driven by an off-duty real police officer.

The two were aged 20 and 22. With a blue light and a stop signal they waved the officer, who was driving her private car, to the side and told her she had committed a traffic violation.

They were in a grey Opel. The officer at once sensed something was wrong and asked to see their identification. She also alerted her colleagues, and two patrol cars arrived and arrested the pair on the spot.

The men wore civilian clothes with protective vests and carried a full set of police equipment. Seized were a blue light, a 'Please follow' light panel, two police belts, several pepper sprays, assorted police badges, a blank-firing pistol, and two knives.

There was one more person in the car. Under a blanket on the back seat hid a 21-year-old woman. Asked what she was doing, she said she had wanted to escape the awkward situation she had landed in. She appears not to have been involved and is being treated as a witness.

The two finally admitted they were not officers. Where the equipment came from is still to be determined. They are being investigated on suspicion of impersonating officials and of violating weapons law.

The police announced the case under the headline 'Badly done.'
